As stated in the article by Matt Richtel, "Digital devices deprive brain of needed downtime."
With constant technological advances, people are becoming so consumed in their digital devices and gadgets, that they are over working the brain too often. It's healthy to allow yourself some off time just to take a pause from technology. Maybe exercising, going out to dinner, or even just a nap are good ways to give your brain a much needed rest.
Everyday, when I get a little downtime, I turn my phone off for a little while and just sit and relax, using no technology.
Just yesterday my downtime being spent on twitter actually benefitted me. I know how we all should use the time to ease the mind. I was at the belltower at midnight waiting for a member from my org to meet me to post flyers around campus. I waited for about 5 minutes before I whipped out my phone and hopped on twitter. The girl I was supposed to meet contacted me though a tweet telling me her phone died and that she was in the tech center. If I didn't use that downtime to check twitter, I would've been sitting out there much longer waiting for her and wondering why she never text or called me back.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad how much technology has consumed our lives...
I find it very interesting that you would be able to turn you phone completely off! I would feel so disconnected from the my friends and family and boyfriend. I would absolutely go crazy. I actually carry my phone charger around wit me just in case my phone happens to die. I do sometimes need time to do other things, but it is easy for me to just sit my phone aside and do what i need to do. I feel like people let technology consume their lives. It is for us to use, not for it to use us.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm kind of weird when it comes to being in touch with the latest technology. I guess I'm a little old school lol.
