News in the Jammie Case

Did you guys see this?

RIAA Wins Another Pyrrhic Victory in File-Sharing Case

"In her third trial, Minnesota resident Jammie Thomas-Rasset -- whose fame has extended well beyond the proverbial 15 minutes -- was once again slapped with a fine for sharing 24 songs. On Wednesday, the jury awarded US$1.5 million in damages to Capitol Records. That's $62,500 for each of the 24 songs Thomas-Rasset illegally shared through Kazaa in 2006."

  1. That is ridiculous, how can one person shoulder the blame for everyone. Essentially that is what they are doing in cases like this. They are singling out a few people that they go after with outrageous fines. Obviously they feel that they have to be extremely harsh in order to get the message out, but is this really what the world is coming to? Huge record companies are suing the consumers for stealing from them, when record companies have been stealing from the artists for years. It is a very hypocritical system.

  2. It's sad that it had to come to this. I feel bad because she is being made an example of, and it wont lead to anything. I say this because large numbers of people aren't going to start paying to music or stop downloading illegally because someone got caught doing it. People are going to look for other ways to get around the law. The crazy thing is is that people don't have to resort to programs like Kazaa or Limewire anymore. You can simply google songs with the terms "download" or "mp3" next to them. You can't stop technology, especially dealing with the Internet. The RIAA may have won the battle but they will not win the war.

  3. This is so pathetic. A company as large as RIAA continuing to prosecute one person for 24 songs. It just goes to show the priorities of many companies are mixed up. Great victory RIAA, ruining someones life to prove a point that is currently meaningless.
