Apparently there's a new application for the iphone that deactivates the texting on your phone while over a certain speed limit. Here's the link to the video: RIGHT HERE.
While inarguably this app is a pretty good idea, it raises some very pressing questions about the role of technology in our lives. What if this app had the power to send a message to the police every time it sensed you interacting with your phone? What if the same company were to release a phone that sent out messages to police when it sensed you were going over the speed limit? The technology is definitely at that level. So what's holding them back?
Also, do you think it would be a good idea to mandate the downloading of this app if you have a smart phone? It would certainly save lives taken from texting while driving, but only by limiting our personal freedoms. Perhaps it should come preinstalled on smart phones. What do you think?
I do agree with you that technology has a tremendous amount of influence over our lives, but i feel like when there is such a demand for a solution to help decrease crime in the area of texting and driving, then i think that technology should respond. i also feel that the consumer has the right to deccide whether they want the app or not, therfore it limits some of the control technology has on our lives.
ReplyDeleteThis application sounds like it could have the potential to be beneficial but it makes me wonder if people will still text and drive until they reach that certain speed limit, knowing that the phone will cut them off at a certain point. I just wish that people could relize that things like texting and driving are dangerous and make the decision to not text on their on without having to have an application do it for them. However, this is the world that we live in and unfortunately many people do rely on technology a great deal...maybe it's not a a bad idea.
ReplyDeletei agree with anjelica, i feel like people will still be texting under that certain speed limit. There is a way to get around everything, and this is one of those things that would be easy to get past.
