New Movie: "The Social Network"
I'm sure everyone has seen previews for the movie "The Social Network." It's about the start of Facebook and I thought it was interesting when I came upon this interview on the NBC10 website. Justin Timberlake plays a character in the new film, and he says some things that interested me. For one, he doesn't use Facebook! That doesn't really surprise me since he's busy with his career, but he had a lot of interesting things to say that deals with a lot of things we discussed in class.
I think there's a lot of truth that the internet is a powerful place, and it can be a great place for ideas to flow, but it also can be a very scary place. It's all about how we use the internet, and we'll never know the potential of how far it could go. The video is short and he doesn't go too in depth about the movie but it definitely creates conversation!
Demitri Martin--Social Shaper??
On browsing youtube, I found this clip from a Demitri Martin skit. The clip is essentially about social media and how it affects lives today. Demitri Martin presents himself as a supporter of the Social Shaping theory, in which he displays how needs in our culture cause new technologies (culture effects tech). The professional to whom he talks to believes that technology causes changes in culture, in which our normal lives have been affected (in this case, in a "negative" way) due to a rise in technology (social networking sites).
Enjoy!

glass houses
Glass houses. This is something our class has touched upon that has boggled my mind. We use social networking without discretion nowadays. We post everything about our lives on Facebook and Twitter: what we are doing at the moment, pictures of us drinking the weekend before, our phone number, who we are in a relationship with, who we hate, who we love, and so forth and so forth. It is almost as if our social network site mirrors who we are in real life, only through pictures, images, and text on a screen. We can also be whoever we want on the internet: reveal a bit too much, or post things we would never say in real life.
Regardless, social networking has provided us a place to create an alternate reality. One in which we say and do what we want without restrictions. But who do we expect to read our "online identity?" Our intended audience, that is who. Generally however, this is not the only group who looks into our glass house. I may post things expecting only my close friends to see. I may post things expecting my ex-boyfriend or his friends to see. There may be postings that are intended for people I am not so close to in real life but are "internet friends" to see. But... we can never really control who is to look through our glass house.
There are ways for major businesses and corporations to view our profile, regardless of whether it is private or not. There are ways for your mom to view your Facebook (like standing above your brother while he is viewing your page). Educators and prospective employers can find ways to view your page. This proves that although we expect only about 20 or so people to actually follow us through social networks, there are ways around the system.
It is crazy to think that I post my life through the web. I have about a gazillion (exaggerated) friends on Facebook, and do not even realize that a good portion of them may check my pictures and statuses on a daily basis. Just as Danah Boyd mentioned in her lecture, we have an intended audience. And then we have an even larger audience who can take our information and do what they please with it. Social networks provide us glass houses. We can post what we wish, but should do so with caution. There is a whole world of people out there who can see our online profile, and manipulate it in whatever way they wish.

Hey Topics In Advertising Class!
Go Temple Owls!!!
My name is Gaby Raczka and I am a Communications and Spanish major. This is my final year here at temple and I am very excited to wrap things up.
It is a shame that it took this long for me to introduce my blog but now that I've got a few posts up, and know what the focus of my blog will be I am pleased to invite you all to follow my blog about ProjectEDU. I will be posting on the student organization, which recently I've become the Vice President of, ProjectE.D.U. I find that it is a great cause and a fun way to get involved in Temple and in the community while working with kids to help them develop a love of learning.
No matter what someone's interests are the goal of ProjectE.D.U is to help Temple students help younger students in local schools while doing something they are both passionate about. The views expressed in this blog represent mine alone and not the organization as a whole even though I will try to remain faithful to our mission and goals and beliefs as an org, this is in fact my own personal voice about the organization.
In closing, to stay updated on what we do as a student organization and ways in which you can get involved, please check out my blog. Thanks ahead of time for following or at least stopping by. I look forward to keeping up with all of your interesting blogs and staying up with what you all are thinking about. Since ProjectE.D.U. is important to me and what I am interested in I hope you too find it to be a worthwhile interest.
Have a great day and see you in class!

Any Next Big SNS Idea's?!
With myspace being somewhat outdated and facebook/twiiter being the current major SNS's, I oftenw onder who's going to be the person to brainstorm and invent the next major SNS and what will it be like...something similar to or building off of the exisiting ones or a completely new type of method of social communication?!
Will SNS's eventually wear off or will they become more advanced as years pass? I think and hope they don't tottaly wear off, but I also hope they the generations to come are not as consumed in them as many people today obsessed and I think that can negatively impact one's personal communication skills.

#TwitterGotHacked

A bug was spread across the globe. Even politicians in the WHite House and other nations were affected by these hackers. Some of the links were to porn sites (wow).
So there is obviously a security flaw within Twitter. I don't believe those working at Twitter will be able to patch up this whole for the safety of their users. People put up very personal information that can be put into jeopardy very quickly and easily. Some people use technology to document their lives and we must understand that sites like this aren't reliable nor permanent.
The sad part is that people, including myself, will continue using the social network site to our liking, regardless of the holes in security.
Here's a link to the news broadcast concerning this hacking.
Ladies and Lipstick!
Hey!, my name is Jazmine. My blog is about make up and all the things that make me excited about it. Makeup has played an important role in my life and has helped me gain a lot of exposure. I was able to do a lot fun things such as photo shoots, advertisements, and a little bit of free lance makeup this past year. My blog will talk about the various projects that I was able to do and also give you guys more info on things that all women should know about makeup. Lots of women are so not engaged in the makeup world, and have no idea of the great benefits it can have. I hope to share a bit of my insight and experience with you guys and girls, in hopes that you may become more excited about makeup too. See Ya!

SNS Time Consumption
I enjoy the luxury and fun in being able to connect with old friend, new friends, classmates, and family through social networking (facebook). However, what I hate about it the way it has programmed my mind to rely on it. In the morning, I cannot leave the house without checking my email accounts and facebook. Same in the evening. I doesn't matter how late I may be running or how tired I am. The part that's bad is that I normally find myself consuming way too much time on these sites, when I only intended on doing a simply check for any new messages or updates.

YouTube--more than an website
It's astonishing to realize that it was only five years ago that YouTube made it's debut on web 2.0. Michael Welsh, an anthropologist at Kansas State University made an ethnographic overview of the power and history of YouTube, and more importantly, the YouTube community. His ethnographic findings are very interesting, and I encourage you to watch a clip, if not the entire segment of An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube.
The video addresses the web phenomena (numa numa, soulja boy, charlie bit me ect.) and the power of the little webcam that allows normal people to connect with other normal people in ways that transcend time and space. He gives his own personal example of uploading the web hit Web 2.0. Within a few days, his basement recorded clip had more hits and more diggs than many of the super bowl commercials that boasted of million dollar budgets that were aired during the same time span.
I find this interesting because it seems that the web hasn't so much infiltrated our lives; rather it has created an entirely new subculture of people that come from extremely different lifestyles and backgrounds. The YouTube community interacts with one another much like a physical culture of peoples. The Internet isn't controlling us, it's helping us create an entirely new and exciting subculture.
It's interesting to think that the very first video uploaded on YouTube consisted a guy talking about the elephants at the San Diego Zoo. Now, the community has expanded in such a way that we can get our daily news, gossip, laugh, or cry out of the YouTube collection.

One University's Social Media Blackout
As we prepare to move forward to a discussion of social networking, consider this article on PA's Harrisburg University of Science and Technology's week long social media blackout. Do you take social media for granted, as Provost Darr argues? What would be the positive and negative repercussions of a social media black out in your life and in your community? Darr states, "Often there are behaviors or habits, ways that we use technology that we may ourselves not be able to articulate because we're not aware of them." Based on our class discussions, what theoretical approach is reflected in this statement? How so?

my blog!
Hey guys, I'm Rachel and I'm a sophomore here at Temple, with an undeclared major, but I'm leaning towards advertising- but I would really like to be dance major, which is what my blog is about. I'm very passionate about the art of dancing and trying very hard to make a career out of it and have decided to blog about my adventures at various auditions this semester in Philadelphia. I hope you check it out, and wish me luck!

HELLO MY NAME IS
Hi guys, my name is Maria. I'm a Japanese who grew up in Taiwan and went to an American school there. After I graduated high school I moved to Tokyo to go to Temple University Japan. Then I decided I wanted to experience the American university life and transferred here. So far I'm liking it here in Philadelphia, but still trying to get used to the different environment and the different facilities available on campus.
I am a Junior/Senior in the Communication Major. I'm interested in media and the production side of it. I did an internship at FOX Entertainment Japan and got a great experience out of it. I'm also interested in event coordination. Organized events as an event coordinator in the Student Government in Temple University Japan before I came here. In my personal time I like to listen to music, shop, explore different places and socialize. I also love food so let me know if there's any good places to eat!

ME!!
Hello all! My name is Tara. I am from Upper Darby, about 25 minutes outside of Philly. I am currently an Advertising major at TU. I also am on the cheerleading team for TU which is fun and stressful at the same time, but if you see me out on the field at games give me a shout out! I have many interests which I'm sure you will hear about, but some of them include my family, friends, movies, animals (I love dogs), and many more. You will learn that I'm quiet in class, but not outside of class. So I hope to talk to you all soon! See ya!

Whats up
Hey guys, my name is Aaron. I am a 20 year old junior at temple, and I'm currently a major in advertising. I come from New Jersey but I was mostly raised in New York City. Even after living in Jersey for years I have always been a city kid at heart, which is probably part of the reason why I chose to go to school at Temple in the city of Philadelphia. I always get bored with doing the same thing over and over, but the city has been great supplying me with new, interesting and fun things to do and see, and I'm excited to see if this blog will be just as good. I hope you find my blog to be thought provoking and fun!

Reuse your stuff
Hey this is a blog about reusing old stuff and making it fit for life in 2010. My name is Caitlyn Ridgley, currently an Ad major, quite possibly a graphic design major in the future. I'm pretty good at drawing and painting, so I want to put that to use somehow. I am currently stuck with a bunch of junk left by the previous tenants in my apartment, so I have to do something with it. Instead of just chucking it to the curb, I am going to redesign and make these pieces of furniture look cool. Check out my blog to see the progress.

Los Festingos: more than a band
Hello friends! I am Sam Kwietniak, a lover of music and a musician of love. The two accompany eachother quite nicely, like candlelight and roses. I pretty much do what I like and end up liking whatever it is I do. But more than any of that I love my band, LOS FESTINGOS. At this point in my life, Los Festingos is my life. And the point of Los Festingos is fun. They say that a bird in the hand beats two in the bush, but I'd rather kill all three of em with one stone. And thus, I am blogging about Los Festingos to 1) fulfill whatever requirement it is I have to fulfill for this class 2) Get some free publicity and possibly convert some fans and 3) Because I'm going to have a lot of fun doing this. Because Los Festingos is more than a little garage band. It represents a dream of a world in which we can be ourselves, free from the conforms of society. A world in which people can laugh and love and live free from judgement or ill will. A world in which success is measured by fun and love. The world of the Festingos. So if you are a fan of music, fun, dreams, laughter or life, then join me in this blogging adventure and get ready to enter the world of the Festingos!

Things change sooner or later...
Hey everybody. My name is Jamal Bell. I grew up outside of NYC, Westchester to be exact. I'm a senior communications major with no set career paths in mind. Philly has been cool but I'll probably go to grad school back in New York. I decided to focus my blog on something that is always changing and fun to keep track of: technology. It's fascinating because it seems to be growing exponentially. I'm 20 years old and I remember when I used to listen to a walkman playing cassettes and now we have ipods with cameras that hold thousands of songs (wow).
I hope you take interest in my blog since members of our generation are heavy consumers of new technological innovations.
Football season is here
My name is Juan and I'm here to go a few levels past redundancy by saying that the football season has started. Originally from Colombia, I moved to new york when I was about 10 years old. I've since grown to support the New York Giants, through all their blunders, in their quest towards perfection. Since I'll be watching a lot of NFL games in the coming weeks, I decided to make my blog about THAT.

Hello everyone. My name is Mikhail. I come from Jersey, and although it may smell bad in a healthy chunk of the state, I manage to stay fresh. I also do not support the Jersey Shore cast, especially since they are in Miami now? Now that your questions about me are answered, this is my first blog. Hopefully you find what I write either interesting or at least thought provoking.

Introduction.
Hi All.
Andrew Freed here- wanted to introduce myself. I'm a Communications Major- Junior Year. Originally from Philadelphia. Still here.
A few things about me:
- An obsession with Apple Products (have my MacBook Pro, iPad 3G, iPhone 4, iPod Classic 160G, Magic Mouse, Rechargeable Apple Batteries, Bluetooth Keyboard, iPhone Dock, iPad Dock)....yeah. Waited in line for both the iPhone 4 and iPad. Went to the grand opening at Walnut Street.
- Jazz. I love it. I am a full-time music publicist, handling national media public relations/new media pr-online marketing for a variety of record labels, independent artists, festivals, etc. www.jazzpublicity.com. We are a boutique operation= a lot of responsibility (maybe too much) for someone my age. It's stressful as all hell, but it is my passion.
- Plugged In. Can't separate myself from my electronics. Day in Day out. No life.
and....I love high quality, premium food. Breaks my wallet.

Enjoy- and see you all this semester.

My Addiction
Hi! My name is Anjelica Hicks and I am a Junior at Temple, majoring in Communications. When thinking about what I wanted to make my blog about I was having a really hard time deciding what really interests me....until I found myself at one of my faovrite places-Starbucks. Coffee is definitely my addiction. I have been drinking coffee since I was a little girl and have literally fallen in love with it over the years. It started when my grandparents would just give me tiny tastes of theirs but as I got older I began to have it more frequently and by high school I was drinking it every day...kind of bad, I know. So this is why I chose to write my blog about coffee and all of the things that I love about it. I'll talk about my favorite brands of coffee, my favorite coffee shops and what is about coffee that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Hope you enjoy!

Does anyone really care?
Hi,
My name is Ben Margolies and I am a senior Communications major. I have written blogs in the past, but found that they are very time consuming and hard to really get going. I have a passion for Philly sports and that is what I am going to post about. Here is a link to my blog where I have done the first assignment of posting links to other sites. http://osophilly.blogspot.com/ Personally I usually do not read most blogs people throw in my face but I suggest you give a couple of these a chance. If we all read a little less about what everyone writes, you will have more time to read a little bit about what some one else has to say.
I like to keep things short because I tend to ramble and become a bit sarcastic, even though sarcasm is usually hard to pick up online. Enjoy reading what everyone has to say on everything and remember...two steps forward and one step backwards means you will never get anywhere, and that means you are just wasting time.

The Start of Something New
Hello!
It only made sense to me to make a blog on Korean cuisine because not only do I enjoy eating Korean food, I am Korean.
Although I was not born in Korea, I was raised to value my Korean heritage in all aspects -- in food, language, and culture. One of my favorite past times is cooking. I'm not a very good cook but watching my mom prepare meals has taught me a thing or two.
I'm excited to share my knowledge and experience with you all and I hope you'll be intrigued to try something new!
check out my blog! http://koreanfoood.blogspot.com
???-___-???
I'm Tony Thach and I'm a senior advertising art direction student. Let's see...well, I enjoy a whole aray of hobbies including photography, collecting sneakers, listening to music, painting and drawing, biking and playing soccer and basketball. My blog is a day in the life of me. I bring my camera everywhere with me and document the things I do in that given day. So check it out! It's been a while since i updated it but since its become a semester assignment, it'll keep me from slacking. enjoy!

philly, you are too kind
I absolutely love Philadelphia. The sights, smells, tastes, and even the noises (which many may find absolutely terrifying). This blog I have created to document the experiences I go through each day in Philadelphia. Because after all, this is not only the City of Brotherly Love, but the city of excitement, surprise, insanity, hope, and happiness. Check it out!

She doesn't even go here.....
Well this isn't Mean Girls and I do go to Temple, but I did just transfered here this semester. I am Nicole Brueckman and I am a senior transfer student from Duquesne University.
Duquesne is a small private school in Pittsburgh, Pa that I originally attended to get a degree in sports marketing. However, after three years and WAY to many math classes I decided to go another route. I changed my major to PR and advertising and after a semester I had fallen in love with my new major.
Here was the problem, I was paying WAY to much for school with an okay communications program when I could have been paying not as much for an excellent communications program. Insert Temple University here. So after months, which seemed like years, of going back and forth about transferring my senior year, I knew it was the best thing to do.
I have never been more confident about my decision and his fall semester I hope to get to know you all and share my love of baking through my blog Better Than Yo Momma's Bakin'.

I'm a Billionaire
Not really. But it got your attention.
Anyway, I'm Alexa Ewton, I am junior and a communications major. I love hanging out with my friends and being with my huge family. I can definitely say I'm a goofy person if that was not already clear and I love having fun because life is too short to take everything seriously. I truly believe in karma and getting what you give in life. I'm from New Jersey but nothing like the people on the Jersey Shore. Some people think I am trying to look like Sammi Sweetheart but I've pretty much had the same hair style and look for years so essentially she is trying to be like me.
My blog, http://thegymtheloveofmylife.blogspot.com/ is all about my biggest passion, the gym. I love working out and being healthy. I know a lot about dieting and staying in shape. Some can say I'm obsessed with the gym, but it's a healthy obsession. In the blog I want to share what I know and what I have done to lose weight and get in shape. Being a personal trainer is my fall back plan so maybe sharing some of my knowledge on here will be practice.

Michelle's Cake Corner
Hey everyone!
Here's a link to my personal blog, Michelle's Cake Corner. Making and decorating cakes is my favorite hobby so I thought I'd share some inspiring ones that I've seen with the class. My skills are completely amateur compared to anything I post on the blog, but maybe if I'm not too embarrassed I'll eventually post some pictures of some cakes I've made.
Even though this is a really specific topic, I figured that everyone has had some interaction with cakes before. Maybe you love to make them, maybe you had a terrible experience making one, or maybe you just like to look at them. No matter the case, everyone has at one point sat in front of a cake dedicated especially to them and blown out their birthday candles. Cakes are a great way to express yourself, a feeling, or a particular celebration. I get really mushy about it sometimes, but I think they can carry a lot of emotion and always remind people of happy times.
Hope you enjoy it!

What's Trending
The consumer holds so much power these days. The website trend watching is an excellent example of consumers in action. Businesses watch such websites and networks as these to see what's working and what's not working for consumers across the Internet. Each article takes an upcoming consumer trend and reviews products associated with that trend.
With their own vocabulary of words (functionall or statusphere anyone?) the articles are fun to read and very informative for both businesses, advertisers, and fellow consumers. The article I read while browsing through this site was Nowism. According to the article, this "nowism" trend calls for instant consumer gratification. The site claims that this trend has created a chaotic "avalanche" that is sweeping up everything in its path at an exciting rate.
Abundance of knowledge, products, and services is what fuels this trend and the presence of instant information via the web further adds to the snowball effect nowism is having on the consumer's world. We experience nowism everyday. I find myself skipping web pages if it takes longer than a few seconds to load a web page. Fast food lines are going faster and faster (in some restaurants such as the McDonalds in Korea, you can order before you even step into the line).
We as consumers call for a double standard. We want more things at our fingertips at a faster rate and at the same time complain that we don't get enough "me time". So what did advertisers create? Easy vacation planning, multi-functional phones, and other previously luxury items that have become the everyday for consumers. Some innovations are downright hilarious. Take for example the walkstation which transforms your desktop computer into a lean mean fat burning machine!
Obviously there are wild cards when it comes to any trend, but all in all we can assume that today's consumer is demanding more at a faster rate. Trendwatching is a good site to learn about upcoming trends and the products that are attempting to meet the needs of the rulers of the advertising world--consumers.

Participatory Culture in Action: Auto-Tune the News
Check out this New York Times piece:
From Viral Video to Billboard 100
In class we have been discussing the nature of our digital, information-saturated environment. Much of that information arises out of participatory culture (Flew, p. 32). The Auto-Tune the News folks are a great example of participatory culture in action. The success of their recent Bed Intruder Song not only showcases the power of contemporary creative industries stemming from the enabling capacities of new media, but also brings up questions concerning popular music. As the article states, “It’s not easy to get on that chart… There are plenty of decent radio songs that don’t reach the sales chart.” Will remix pop dominate the charts in the coming years? Where does that leave more traditional artists? And, finally, why is the success of this track significant?

Welcome!
Hey everyone! My name is Rebecca, but most people call be Becca unless they hold a personal grudge(s) against me. I'm originally from Upstate NY where they make the best maple syrup and hike a lot of trails. I decided to go to an urban school because rural life became too mundane and slow-going.
I believe that this world is developing at an alarming rate, and I wanted to have front-row seating. I love Philadelphia in that it still holds small-town people and shops as well as harboring historical landmarks. It is a city with a very unique rhythm and the past two years here have been very enriching.
I'm currently a Junior at Temple University with an Advertising Research major. I am employed by Temple University's Institute for Survey Research and also am an active member of Temple Community Garden. Sustainable communities interest me, and I hope to use the skills learned in advertising to help spread the word about sustainable living. In my spare time, I enjoy the outdoors, photography, and cooking for my friends.
I also enjoy the company of 3 roommates, 2 of which have food allergies. I am a self-proclaimed vegetarian (meaning I won't totally disown meat) and cooking in the apartment is always a challenge. Visit my personal blog Crisis Control to learn more about cooking with allegories and health in mind.
